Speed intervals

Now that it’s finally starting to feel like fall, I’m getting excited about the upcoming race season. I have several races planned over the next few months. I have a 5k in two weeks, a 10k in three weeks and another 10k in five weeks.

Yesterday, I read this article about speed workouts and decided to try a new workout: 6 x 800 meters at goal 5k pace, with a 400-meter recovery jog between intervals. I didn’t hit my 5k goal pace (sub-7:00) until the last interval, but it’s a start!

800 @3:37 with 400-meter jog
800 @3:32 with 400-meter jog
800 @3:30 with 400-meter jog
800 @3:25 with 400-meter jog

I was pretty happy that my overall pace for this workout was 7:34 – a faster pace than the 5k I ran on Saturday! So, even if I run my next 5k at this pace, it’ll still be an improvement. 🙂

While at the gym last night, I saw a sign advertising a Holiday Rowing Challenge during the months of November and December. Apparently, the challenge is to row 50k, 100k, or 200k meters. I’ll have to learn more about this challenge, because it sounds fun! Plus, it will give me something to focus on before I begin training for my next marathon in December.
